ENGL 3107 Governing Bodies: Body Text and Contexts

While offering possibilities for new ways of seeing sexed/gendered/textual bodies, this course is centers on how the visual, corporeal body is read and regulate by past and present socio-cultural structures: that is, how society, culture, ideologies/philosophies, and governments serve as governing systems to define, determine, and discipline bodies. Equal parts social science, cultural studies, philosophy, and jurisprudence students study and research how governing institutions all socially-constructed -- respond to sex, gender, and sexuality. These governing systems and their resulting corporeal controls are understood through various theoretical lenses: feminism, mens studies, trans studies, sociology, and cultural studies to name a few.
