ENGL 3001 Linguistics

Language is widely regarded as a defining feature of being human, but what exactly are the universal features of human language? In this course you will study examples of the rich diversity of human languages, examine the underlying universal principles, and develop the analytic skills to understand the fundamental components of phonology (sound), morphology (words), syntax (sentences), and semantics (meaning). Applying these skills fosters a deeper appreciation of social influences, childhood development, historical change, and writing. Because language permeates almost everything we do as human beings, knowledge of language can be a source of lifelong enrichment.
