HUM 5612 Dark Nights of the Soul

At the intersection of religion, philosophy, literature, and psychology, this course analyzes how diverse mystics, poets, and other thinkers have grappled with inner anguish, a sense of futility, and/or the absence of feelings of the transcendent. Particular attention will be given to the relationship between text, context, plausible original meanings, and enduring relevance.
