CLQ 3221 C12/EN:Writing of/as Rituals
This course offers an introduction to contemporary literary cinematic arts-song, chant, poetry, fiction, film, and memoir-that encompass rituals: real or imagined. Students read how rituals shape identity and bond individuals to groups. Although concentrated on the peoples of California, students look at texts written about other regions and groups as well. Ultimately, students explore how ritual practice at Dominican University of California-whether defined as religious, scientific, or magical-incorporates individuals into social groups, engenders feelings of belonging, and signals individual maturation.
