CLQ 3140 C4/AH: War & Peace Through Image & Idea
Through the use of imagery from the visual arts, film, television and theatre and literary examples from memoirs, novels and letters, this course explores how war or peace becomes imbedded into the cultural fabric of a society. We will touch on such issues as: war as conquest over the Other, the romance of warfare versus the gritty reality of war, the selling of the 'Just War,' the awful consequences of war and, finally, how a society visually commemorates its victims, both to glorify them and then to sanction further conflict.
