ASPP 5203 Counseling Skills in Sport and Performance Psychology

This course introduces the student to foundational counseling skills for applied practice in Sport and Performance Psychology. These skills include appropriate use of self, empathy, reflective practice, attending and confronting with special attention to the impact of diversity on the counseling relationship. ASPP 203 will introduce the practice of assessment, and action planning with emphasis on Rogerian and Motivational Interviewing approaches within the SPP consulting relationship. The course will address AOD, co-occurring disorders, suicidality, crisis management and legal and ethical considerations for SPP practitioners. Topics of collaboration with community resources, psychoeducation, referrals and advocacy will also be introduced. Methods of service delivery will be discussed. A didactic experiential approach will be utilized, including group processes. This course will incorporate hands-on experience with role-playing and active practice of counseling skills for practice in applied settings.
