HONO 3414 Theater for Social Change

The performance and study of theater and its applications in local contexts through service-learning with community partners. Connecting craft to its socio-historical contexts, students explore questions of cultural difference (gender, race, class, and sexuality) in playtexts by such playwrights as Richard Greenberg, Lorraine Hansberry, Moisés Kaufman, Paula Vogel, Peter Shaffer, and Wendy Wasserstein. Students learn to use the tools of theater for social change not only on stage but also in settings including schools, community centers, clinics, and prisons. This course only satisfies the CORE requirement when offered as a service learning course.
