HIST 3007 Disease and Disasters in World History

This course considers disease and disasters as historical artifacts. How did people explain and cope with inexplicable disasters? How did disease (e.g., cholera, small pox, syphilis, HIV/AIDS, tuberculosis) ravage societies and how did measures in response both aid and oppress people, oftentimes women, the poor, the elderly, and other marginalized people. We learn how diagnoses and "cures" are shaped by cultural norms.
