Certificate PLUS

Certificate students may choose to add Applied Performance Placements to their Certificate program, should they be interested in applied sport and performance psychology work, or in order to align with the Association for Applied Sport Psychology (AASP) and their Certified Mental Performance Consultant credentialing. In order to add the placements to the Certificate, students must register for a minimum of two applied performance placement experiences (ASPP 5231, ASPP 5232 and/or ASPP 5233).

Applied Performance Placements

The Applied Sport and Performance Psychology program offers students the opportunity to work hands-on with individuals and teams in sport and performance settings. These settings include club sports, high schools, collegiate teams and performance domains outside of sport. Placement participation is a core feature of the ASPP program. All placements are supervised, in both individual and group supervision, by faculty members who are Certified Mental Performance Consultants (CMPC) through the Association for Applied Sport Psychology. After passing required prerequisite courses, students will complete their first placement (Intensive Placement; PI) onsite. The second and third placements are at a site of the student's choosing, based on their logistical and geographical needs. All students must be approved to take part in the placement program by the department, and applications will be vetted internally to insure fit. Both PII and PIII are a minimum of a 16-week commitment.

In order to participate in placements, students must have completed the following courses or have fulfilled the following AASP knowledge areas

AASP Knowledge Areas
  ASPP Course
 K1  ASPP 5207
 K2  ASPP 5200, ASPP 5204
 K5  ASPP 5203
 N/A  ASPP 5208, ASPP 5213, ASPP 5229
*if a student has the above AASP Knowledge Areas from another institution, they may be used in place of the prerequisites and they may not need to be taken again. However, students will typically need to take ASPP 5229 Introduction to Applied Performance Placements, prior to beginning Applied Performance Placements.
