HONO 3105 Ethics of Housing and Homelessness

Homelessness in the United States has been on the rise since the 1980s and for many, housing costs are too high. Students will analyze the problem of homelessness and lack of affordable housing in relation to theories of justice. Community engagement will provide lived context for student learning. Students will gain an understanding of the demographics of homelessness and the policies that have created housing segregation, shortage, and insecurity, and the resulting problem of homelessness. Drawing on theories of justice, students will examine and envision alternative ways to structure society that ensure all have safe and secure housing.
