Satisfactory Progress in Written English Policy
The ability to write well is foundational to the successful completion of a degree. Students who are required to take a writing course at Dominican must enroll in the course to which they are assigned, beginning in their first semester at Dominican and must complete the CORE Effective Communication course sequence each subsequent semester until they have fulfilled the requirement.
Students who fail to pass either Effective Communication 1 or Effective Communication 2 after two semesters must submit a petition to the Academic Petition Committee requesting to remain enrolled in the university. This petition must be accompanied by a statement from the instructor of the student's most recent Effective Communication course regarding the student's potential for meeting the Effective Communication writing requirement.
Students must pass Effective Communication 1 and 2 with a grade of 'C' (2.0) or higher to fulfill the CORE Curriculum requirement. Concurrent enrollment in or successful completion of Effective Communication 1 is a prerequisite for enrolling in upper division courses.
