POL 3520 American Foreign Policy & National Security
This course covers the history of the American foreign policy machine. The role of the President, foreign policy bureaucracy in relationship to Congress and public opinion is explored throughout. The first part of the course covers the foreign policy analysis and process from the birth of the United States through the Cold War. The second part of the course reviews U.S. foreign policy from the end of the Cold War to present day with a focus on the formulation, organization, and implementation of U.S. national security policy through an examination of contemporary case studies. Topics include challenges posed by rogue and failed states, peacekeeping, terrorism, arms control, military alliances, and the role of international institutions. The course culminates with a research project to be presented at an undergraduate academic conference. (International Politics and Policy Designated, Research Designated)
