PHSC 2200 Earth Science
An introduction to earth science emphasizing physical processes that affect the world and the way humans live on it. This course investigates the nature and origin of the earth and earth materials, the forces that create change on land and in the oceans, and how we have come to understand these processes. We study the causes of change (floods, earthquakes, volcanic eruptions, and climate change), the impact those changes have on the world around us, and what can be done to mitigate their hazards. The class ends with study of the oceans and atmosphere, and the particular challenges facing California. This provides an opportunity for students to see how an understanding of scientific principles informs good citizenship - 3 lecture hours. Recommended for non-Biological Sciences or non-Chemistry majors.
