HIST 3502 The City: Real and Imagined
Each city reveals historical transformations as it grows declines, adapts or disappears. The city is the product of decisions, contested norms, technologies, and interactions among its people and with outsiders. This course considers how key cities in history created, enforced, and countered regimes and social mores. The built environment, and rhetoric about its evils or promise, offers students a unique window onto an evolving geography of culture and power. Cities under study vary by instructor.
