ARTH 3013 Indigenous World Art
The arts produced by traditional cultures in diverse world regions. Attention to the collecting/display of "ethnographic" art, the commercialization/appropriation of artistic styles/motifs, and the complex definitions of "Indigenous peoples" in a variety of global areas. Challenges involved with the preservation of indigenous cultures and the importance of indigenous cultural practitioners – including contemporary artists, athletes, dancers, writers, musicians, and performers. The opportunity to meet collectors, visit local museums, work with actual materials from the Dominican University collection, and meet several contemporary artists working to preserve/expand the definitions of Indigenous arts in the world today.
