EDU 3029 Early Literacy & Literature
This course provides students with the theoretical foundations for the development of literacy (reading, writing, listening, & speaking) in young children. Students learn the social, cultural, and linguistic factors that affect literacy development. Students study children�s literature including important authors and illustrators and uses of children�s literature for teachers and others working with young children. This course includes language structures and linguistics, including the basics of early reading (e.g., phonemes, phonemic awareness, phonics, and sound-symbol relationships). A fieldwork practicum tutoring reading in a culturally and linguistically diverse early childhood classroom is required. Spring semesters.
