CLQ 3002 HO/HI:Post Deng Xiaoping's China

This course will investigate the new blending of Confucianism with modernity starting with Deng Xiaoping “Four Modernizations” and how it is revolutionizing Chinese society in terms of family/gender relations, population/ecology, technology /science, wealth/class, governance/party. A central question will be where the “Awakened Dragon” goes in twenty-first century as it emerges as a major world player and yet struggles around Faustian Bargain between CCP and Han people of trading off economic prosperity for political freedom. In short, how long can this modern version of 'Mandate from Heaven' be maintained as the Chinese become better educated and globally connected? Co-requisite CLQ 3001.
