CLQ 3001 HO/AH: Contemporary Chinese Art History

In this class we will study the contemporary art of China and its political, historical and cultural contexts. The late 20th century and early 21st century were a time of radical social changes for China, which experienced severe rifts with the past as a result of modernization and industrialization. This course will investigate how artists, Ai Weiwei, Yue Minjun, Zhang Xiaogang and many others , have responded by questioning the current political structure, ecological issues, population growth and other changing cultural and social values in the critical nature of their work. This class will acquaint students with major contemporary Chinese art movements including Cynical Realism, Political Pop, and Chinese Women’s Art Movement. In addition, the global reach of art today will be studied as it is manifested in the dynamic interchange that is occurring between artists in China, Europe, and the United States.
