ART 3812 Art + Community
Art + Community: introduces students to the concept, process, and creation of community-engaged art. In their assignments students will collaborate on and create unique and impactful artistic statements addressing community concerns. The creative process serves as an inquiry-based, hands-on approach to explore ideas, collaborate with others, and hone a unique and impactful artistic statement. Students produce art with and for the community that address locally relevant sustainability or social justice issues. This is a studio art course and will entail learning about visual arts methods and processes. In addition, students experience ways in which art creates solidarity and facilitates community building. On a personal level, students learn what motivates them to act, and how to link their values to that of their communities and on to a call to action. This course only satisfies the CORE requirement when offered as a service learning course.
