SOC 2004 Latino Families in the United States

This course will examine the cultural, social, political, economic, educational and health experiences of Latino families in the United States. Through readings, and examinations of media and discourse, we will discuss the family experience and transnational ties among diverse Latino families. We will discuss the roles of social norms, family values and perspectives, and structures in shaping everyday family life. Through a semester-long project, students will gain a critical understanding of agency and ethical considerations as Latino families navigate family dynamics and contemporary issues shaped by race, gender, sexuality, language, religion, socioeconomic status, and immigration status.
