Latin American Studies (Minor)

The Latin American Studies Minor at Dominican University of California is an interdisciplinary program, housed in the History Department, designed to study Latin American perspectives on history, geography, literature, politics, religion, language, philosophy, art, and culture. Students will have the chance to study both Latin Americans and Latin American immigrants living in the United States. This minor is designed to complement any major field of study, with the intent of providing transferable skills alongside incredibly relevant breadth and depth of knowledge concerning the fastest growing population in California.

Proficiency in languages spoken in Latin America, especially Spanish, is highly encouraged, but not required. Study abroad opportunities are plentiful and are easily facilitated through advising.

Program Learning Outcomes

Students will demonstrate the ability to do the following:

1. Comprehend the unique character of various Latin American cultures, including the region’s diverse historical roots and long-lasting colonial status.
2. Analyze cultural differences relevant to Latin American Studies with a respect for difference.
3. Evaluate significant issues in the past and present of Latin America through oral or written communication.

Elective Courses

Students must complete upper division Latin American focused courses in at least two disciplines, including History, Literature, Visual Studies, Religion and Philosophy. One 4 unit Spanish Language course may be substituted for one 4 unit elective requirement within the minor.
