ART 5358 The Artist's Graphic Novel
In this course, students will break through the panel borders into the exciting four-color world of graphic novels. The class will explore the comics medium from the inside out, developing complex characters and compelling narratives and then adapting their stories onto the comics page. Students will learn how to create dynamic page layouts and intricate text to image relationships that will transform their words into modern sequential art. The course is part lecture and part workshop. Weekly general discussions on assigned readings and specific lectures on contemporary innovations in sequential art will enhance students’ basic knowledge on how to approach the comics medium as creators – both authors and artists. Students will build on the skills gained in
ENGL 5358: The Writer’s Graphic Novel and adapt their comic script into finished comic-art pages by the end of the semester. Credit for graduate level work in this class will require more expansive exploration and production on class assignments, as well as a self-directed final project.
