American Studies Minor
In addition to satisfying the core requirements of the English major, students who pursue a minor in American Studies will explore the many voices that make up American literatures. Courses taken outside the English department will augment the study of how American history, politics, and the arts mutually influence literary creation.
Program Learning Outcomes
Students will demonstrate:
- Advanced Literacy. Close read and apply critical theory to written, verbal, and visual texts; write expository essays in Standard English that have focused theses, clear organization, and integrated secondary sources
- Knowledge of Literary Forms and Concepts. Identify and analyze the literary elements and forms of major genres including fiction, poetry, drama, and film, and to recognize hybrid forms
- Digital and Multimedia Application. Critically evaluate and effectively communicate through digital and other multimedia forms in a complex, polymodal world
- Awareness of Historical and Cultural Contexts. Make connections between texts and their historical and cultural contexts; identify, define, and analyze diverse literary canons
Requirements
Select one elective from the
Literatures of the Americas course list, either from US Literature, Ethnic Literatures or American Literary Topics.
Electives:
Student selects one Art History elective, one History elective and one Politics elective from American surveys or specific American topic courses. Only with explicit approval of the Department of Literature and Language may American courses from other disciplines be substituted for the disciplines here.
