HUM 5227 The Social Contract Redux

Democracy is increasingly challenged by a range of phenomena, including extreme wealth inequality, ethnic strife, and a media environment that leaves many citizens fact-challenged. This course revisits the roots of modern democracy in the social contract philosophies of Thomas Hobbes, John Locke, and Jean-Jacques Rousseau in order to better understand the challenges faced by democratic philosophy and politics today.
